BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Langston Will Start Opener

Share

Mark Langston, who rebounded from a 10-17 record in 1990 to lead the Angels’ staff with 19 victories last season, will start the team’s opener against the Chicago White Sox on April 7 at Anaheim Stadium.

Jim Abbott will pitch the second game, but Manager Buck Rodgers hasn’t yet scheduled the first starts for Chuck Finley, Joe Grahe and Don Robinson. “All three left-handers, from the years they had last year, deserve to go opening day,” Rodgers said, “but Finley’s out because of his toe (surgery), and I just picked Langston. Jimmy’s going to pitch a lot of opening days in his career.”

Finley, making his first start and second appearance of the spring, gave up a towering three-run home run to Oakland’s Jose Canseco and was the loser in the Athletics’ 9-1 victory Thursday at Angels Stadium in Palm Springs. Finley, who is recovering from an operation on his left big toe, gave up four runs and seven hits in three innings.

Catcher Lance Parrish sat out the exhibition game because of tenderness in his right shoulder. . . . Gary DiSarcina has an eight-game hitting streak and is 10 for 25 in that span. . . . Reliever Chuck Crim had a welt on his right forearm after a line drive by Walt Weiss struck him in the sixth inning. X-rays were negative.
