PREP ROUNDUP : Garner Shoots Par 72 to Lead El Toro to Victory Over Dana Hills
Ben Garner shot a par 72 at El Toro Marine Base to lead El Toro to a 396-428 victory over Dana Hills in a South Coast League golf match Thursday.
Daryl Wooldridge shot a 78 for the Chargers (8-0, 2-0 in league), who have taken the early league lead. Scott Richardson led Dana Hills with a 73.
In Angelus League golf:
Servite 209, St. John Bosco 212--Dennis Manzo shot a three-over-par 39 for Servite (1-2, 1-1) at El Dorado Park.
In Pacific Coast League golf:
Trabuco Hills 197, Costa Mesa 257--Jason Brown and Mark Christensen each shot a one-over 37 to lead Trabuco Hills (6-0, 1-0) at Coto de Caza Golf Club.
In Sea View League golf
University 199, Tustin 227--Brett Skinner, Mark Redford each shot a three-over 39 for University (7-2, 2-0).
In Pacific Coast League baseball:
Trabuco Hills 4, Laguna Hills 2--Minutes before the rains came, Brad Cervantes and Gibson Gomez had one-run doubles in the seventh inning to give Trabuco Hills (4-3, 2-0) the victory. Carey Smith (3-0) was the winning pitcher.
In Century League boys’ track and field:
El Modena 89, Villa Park 34--Fred Forbes took first in the 220 (23.4) and the 440 (52.5). Teammate Ernie Wilson captured the 100 (10.4) for El Modena (5-0, 1-0).
In Freeway League boys’ track and field:
La Habra 73, Troy 54--Brandon Mahon won the mile in 4 minutes 46.1 seconds and the two-mile in 10:44 to lead La Habra. Santi Allen won the long jump and high jump for host Troy (1-3, 1-0), which won eight of the 15 events.
In Garden Grove League boys’ track and field:
Los Amigos 102, Bolsa Grande 24--Jessie Fausto led Los Amigos to the victory by winning the 220, 440 and the high jump, and by running a leg on the Lobos’ winning mile relay team.
In Orange League boys’ track and field:
Brea-Olinda 101, Western 26--Drew Hubbard won the high, long and triple jumps with marks of 6 feet 2 inches, 20-1 and 39-9, and Chris Conrad won the shotput (49-3) and discus (138-7 3/4) for visiting Brea-Olinda (6-2, 1-0).
In Sunset League boys’ track and field:
Huntington Beach 84, Westminster 51--Lance Jacot won the 110 hurdles in 15.1 seconds for Huntington Beach (3-0). Bill Voorhees ran 4:34 in the 1,600 meters and 10:17.6 in the 3,200 meters for Westminster (1-2).
Marina 73, Edison 50--Tony Parrish won the high jump (5-8), long jump (20-0) and triple jump (44-5) for Marina (2-2, 1-2). Mark Crowley won the 110 hurdles and pole vault (14-0) for the Vikings.
In Century League girls’ track and field:
El Modena 68, Villa Park 54--Kristina Dahlberg was a triple winner in the 440 (1:03.5), 880 and the mile (5:35.5) for El Modena (4-1, 1-0). Teammate Brooke Potter won her events, the shotput (29-5) and the discus (80-1).
In Freeway League girls’ track and field:
Fullerton 70, Buena Park 53--Marie Pritchett won in the high jump (5-0), shotput (31-1) and discus (87-6) for Fullerton (5-1, 1-0). Lindsay Amsberry won in the 880 and mile for the Indians.
Troy 79, La Habra 48--Julie Lewczyk won the 880 and the mile and anchored the winning mile relay team for host Troy (3-1, 1-0). Kirsten Zeydel won the 100 and 330 hurdles and the high jump and Jennifer Hache won the 100 and the long jump for the Warriors.
Sonora 92, Sunny Hills 34--Carrie Garritson won the 1,600 and 3,200 in 5:26.6 and 11:29.03 for Sunny Hills. Lisa Knott won the 100 and 300 hurdles in 15.44 and 49.78 for Sonora.
In Empire League girls’ track:
Esperanza 74 1/2, Katella 52 1/2--Freshman Kristy Kierulff won three events and high jumped 5-8 1/2, one of the top marks in the Southern Section this season, to lead Esperanza. Kierulff also won the long jump (15-8) and triple jump (33-11).
In Garden Grove League girls’ track and field:
Los Amigos 89, Bolsa Grande 37--Katie O’Connor won the 220 and both hurdle races and ran a leg on Los Amigos’ winning mile relay team as the Lobos cruised to the victory.
In Pacific Coast League girls’ track and field:
Estancia 83, Century 42--Junior Lauren Weaver took first in two events, 440 (1:06.7) and 330 hurdles (51.0). Teammate Carrie Appell placed first in the 880 (2:41) and the mile (5:54). Estancia is 1-2, 1-0.
In South Coast League boys’ track and field:
Mission Viejo 92, Irvine 35--Heather Sterlin, last year’s Division 4-A champion, went 18-6 1/4 in the long jump. Andrea Dean won in the 100 (13.0) and the 200 (26.9) into the wind. Mission Viejo is 1-0 in league.
In Sunset League girls’ track and field:
Fountain Valley 95, Santa Ana 39--Junior Kim Foster won the 1,600 and the 3,200 and sophomore Marlene Lang won the 200 and 800 for Fountain Valley.
Edison 93, Marina 34--Shelley Taylor (800, 1,600), Tami Letterman (100, 200) and Mindy O’Bric (shotput, discus) were all double winners for Edison (3-0, 2-0).
Huntington Beach 74, Westminster 52--Jill Yoshioka ran the 800 meters in 2:29.7 and the 1,600 meters in 5:54.5 for Westminster (1-2). She also anchored the 1,600 relay team, which won in 4:36. Huntington Beach is 2-1 in league.
In nonleague boys’ volleyball:
Cypress 3, Mayfair 0--Setter David Spengon and Scott Jefferson both had 10 kills for host Cypress (5-2). Spengon also had two aces and 28 assists.
Capistrano Valley 3, Estancia 0--Eric McElvie had 23 assists for Capistrano Valley (5-1). Teammate Eric Seiffert had 10 kills.
In Garden Grove League boys’ tennis:
Kennedy 12, Pacifica 6--Ray Nanda and Mintak Jao swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, in No. 1 doubles for Kennedy.
La Quinta 17, Garden Grove 1--Bach Nguyen swept in No. 1 singles for La Quinta (9-0, 4-0). Hien Wu and Peter Lam teamed to sweep in No. 1 doubles for the Aztecs.
