COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans’ Popoff Beats Pacific With 4-Hitter

James Popoff pitched a four-hitter as Cal State Fullerton beat University of the Pacific, 4-0, in a Big West Conference baseball game Friday at Pacific.

Popoff, a senior right-hander, had eight strikeouts to improve to 5-1. Frank Herman and Craig Fairbrother had solo home runs for the Titans (21-8, 5-2 in conference). It was the fourth home run for Herman and the fifth for Fairbrother, who has hit all of his in the last five games.

Phil Nevin had a two-run single in the eighth as Fullerton took a 3-0 lead.

Pacific is 10-18, 1-9.

In another Big West baseball game:

Fresno State 10, UC Irvine 4--Gary Patterson, Division I’s winningest pitcher, improved his record to 9-0 with a nine-hitter, striking out nine.

Irvine’s Matt Filson was three for three and drove in two runs as the Anteaters fell to 14-10, 4-3. Host Fresno State improved to 20-11, 3-1.

In a UCI/Marriott Tennis Classic quarterfinal match:

Washington 5, UC Irvine 4--The Huskies won four of six singles matches and the No. 2 doubles match to upset the top-seeded Anteaters (6-7).

In the Pacific Coast Championships men’s golf tournament:

UC Irvine Third--William Yanagisawa and Joey Sugar finished in a three-way tie with Kevin Carissimi of Fresno State for second place as the Anteaters finished six strokes behind UCLA and two behind the Bulldogs at Sandpiper Golf Course. Per Nyman of Fresno State took medalist honors at 211.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Chapman 5, Utah State 4--Host Chapman ended a three-match Division I losing streak with a victory in a match played over two days because of rain.

In the Heritage Inn/Titan Classic women’s tennis tournament:

Cal State Sacramento 5, Cal State Fullerton 1--Roseann Alva won at No. 1 singles for the 0-13 Titans’ only point.
