TENNIS ROUNDUP : Winning Tournament Isn’t Difficult for Navratilova

Martina Navratilova beat France’s Nathalie Tauziat, 6-2, 6-1, Sunday to win the U.S. Women’s Hardcourts tournament at San Antonio, her 159th career singles title.

“I wasn’t really pressed,” said Navratilova, who didn’t lose a set in four matches. “It was a comfortable week for me like in the old days when I rolled over people. But it doesn’t happen very often, so it felt good this week.”

Navratilova survived two break points during the second game of the first set to establish a pattern of winning all the big points and squelching all of Tauziat’s opportunities.

Navratilova said she did not feel in control of the match until she broke Tauziat’s serve a second time during the first set to take a 5-1 lead.

Top-seeded Monica Seles suffered a sprained wrist while riding her bicycle in Florida and will not compete in this week’s Family Circle Magazine Cup tournament, officials said Sunday.

In Davis Cup quarterfinal action, Brazil took a 2-1 lead over Italy as Fernando Roese and Cassio Motta defeated Omar Camporese, 6-1, 6-2, 5-7, 3-6, 6-3, at Maceio, Brazil.

The final two singles in the rain-plagued match will be played today.

Stefan Edberg and Christian Bergstrom won their singles in straight sets to complete a 5-0 sweep for Sweden over Australia at Lund, Sweden. Edberg, the world’s top-ranked player, defeated Wally Masur, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), and Bergstrom beat Richard Fromberg, 6-4, 7-5.

The matches were shortened to best-of-three sets after Edberg and Anders Jarryd defeated John Fitzgerald and Todd Woodbridge in a four-set doubles match Saturday, giving Sweden an unbeatable 3-0 lead.
