IRVINE : City Votes to Seek Funds for Centers

Share

Although a proposed senior citizens center and adult day-care center in Woodbridge would cost about $5.7 million more than the city has, the City Council voted this week to find ways to come up with the extra money.

The unanimous vote Tuesday during a joint meeting between council members and its Senior Citizens Council drew applause from about 120 senior citizens who attended the special meeting at City Hall.

One possible way to meet the shortfall for the two senior facilities is to borrow money through city bonds, which might require asking voters to raise property taxes to repay them debt.

The senior facilities are part of the first phase of a proposed 22-acre Woodbridge Community Park that the council approved in 1990. The park is envisioned to include senior services, community and child-care centers, playground equipment and other park amenities. So far, the city has $3.1 million put aside to build the two senior facilities, estimated to cost $8.8 million if built at the same time.
