COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Three Homers in Inning Help Titans

Craig Fairbrother, Phil Nevin and Tony Banks homered during a seven-run sixth inning as Cal State Fullerton routed Fresno State, 12-3, in a Big West Conference baseball game Saturday at Amerige Park.

Fairbrother’s homer, his sixth, came with one on. There were two runners on when Nevin hit his 16th, and Banks followed with his eighth.

Banks was three for five, driving in five runs as the Titans, ranked seventh by Baseball America, improved to 25-9, 8-3. Fresno State is 23-13, 5-3.

Dan Naulty (7-1), went the distance, pitching a six-hitter.

In another Big West baseball game:

Pacific 3, UC Irvine 2--Matt Philson hit a two-run home run for host UC Irvine (15-13, 5-6) in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 2-2 tie. Pacific’s Rod Barber then hit a two-out, run-scoring single in the ninth for Pacific (12-21, 3-11).

In Big West softball:

Cal State Fullerton 2-1, Fresno State 0-2--Tiffany Boyd (18-5) threw a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts for the Titans (25-12, 7-5) in the opener. Marci White and Karin Knoop each had an RBI, and shortstop Denise Dewalt had three hits.

Fresno State (32-6, 14-2) scored twice in the first inning of the second game as Cheryl Longeway dropped to 7-7.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 7, San Diego 2--Brett Hansen-Dent defeated Fredrick Axsater at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-0, for the visiting Anteaters (9-8).

Irvine swept all three doubles matches and has won 14 of its last 18 doubles matches.

The 23rd-ranked Toreros (10-7) lost their fifth consecutive match. San Diego was playing without Jose Luis Noriega, the nation’s top-ranked player, who is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season because of a shoulder injury.

In the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn.:

Cal State Northridge 3, UC Irvine 1--Leland Quinn had 27 kills, giving him 398 for the season and surpassing Steve Florentine’s UCI record of 379 set in 1990, as the host Anteaters (5-18, 2-13) lost their fifth consecutive match.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Christ College Irvine 6-11, Pt. Loma Nazarene 9-5--Pitcher Armando Diaz (5-1) had a triple and a home run for the host Eagles (21-8, 9-3) in the second game. Armando Oliveras and Mike Krumrine each had two hits in the opener for CCI.

Southern California College 5-3, Azusa Pacific 3-8--Matt Dahlgren doubled in Brad Keays with the tie-breaking run with one out in the top of the ninth, then scored after two wild pitches by Chris Matkin in the opener at Azusa Pacific.

Justin Pysar hit a two-out, two-run homer in the first.

In the second game, Pysar again hit a two-out, two-run homer in the first, but Azusa Pacific’s Jeff Crockett hit the key homer, a grand slam during a six-run fifth.

The Vanguards are 16-13-1, 8-5.
