That Small-Town Feeling in La Verne

Share

I would like to thank the Los Angeles Times for giving La Verne a good deal of coverage recently. I would especially like to commend Peter Bennett for his comprehensive article on “Foothill Community Likes Small-Town Feeling.” (Times, Real Estate, March 1). He captured what it is about La Verne that makes it special.

It is the people who live, and who have lived, in La Verne who have made it a good place.

In my judgment, as a La Verne observer for 38 years, it has little to do with the amount of traffic on Foothill Boulevard, nor the sizes of the buildings along it.

This brings us to the vote on Initiative O on the April 14 ballot. It is basically a vote that will determine whether or not the construction of the Edwards theater, already underway, can be stopped. It can be, if Edwards cannot do enough work on the site to comply with legal conditions.

Mike Ward’s article (Times, March 22) spells out the complications involved. Those complications can be avoided if we vote No on Initiative O.

Let us not be beguiled by the statement in the Sample Ballot that another theater company could be found to build a smaller theater. Would that not limit the theater to show the movies that would bring in the greatest profit? Are they the ones we would want to see, or have available for our children and young people?
