CASITAS WATER DISTRICT : Moratorium on Hookups Extended
Despite moves by cities across Ventura County to relax restrictions on water use, the Casitas Municipal Water District has extended for one year a moratorium on new water hookups.
The board of directors voted Wednesday to continue its restrictions on new water service and on the expansion of existing service through April 10, 1993.
The moratorium was instituted in April, 1990, when district officials instituted a management policy at Lake Casitas intended to guarantee that the reservoir always is maintained at a safe level, Casitas General Manager John Johnston said.
The strategy anticipates both rainy and dry spells, Johnson said. District officials can only allocate water from the lake that they are sure will be replenished, to ensure that it does not run dry, he said.
The moratorium is not complete, however, Johnson said. A new water supply, the Mira Monte Well, went on line last month and is expected to provide 250 to 300 acre-feet of water each year.
Much of this water will be used for new hookups across the district, which will be granted on a case-by-case basis, Johnson said.
