HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Grossmont Edges No. 1 Montgomery
Montgomery and Grossmont, the county’s first- and second-ranked baseball teams, respectively, provided a sneak preview Saturday of what many think will be the matchup in this year’s San Diego Section 3-A championship.
Grossmont won, 1-0, on a fifth-inning home run to right field by senior third baseman Matt Jones.
It was one of only two hits off Montgomery sophomore Oscar Robles (3-1), and it was the Aztecs’ first loss in 11 games. Grossmont, whose 28-game unbeaten streak was snapped Wednesday, improved to 10-1-1.
Jason Eskridge (4-0) and Mark Olson (fourth save) combined on a four-hitter. In the first inning, Olson struck out the side in the sixth and struck out the first two batters in the seventh before a groundout ended the game, which was played at San Diego State’s Smith Field. Eskridge had five strikeouts, Robles nine.
In their game last year, Montgomery led 3-1 going into the top of the seventh inning at Montgomery, but former Foothiller Todd Cady, the Section’s all-time home run leader, hit a two-out grand slam to give Grossmont an eventual 6-5 victory.
