COUNTYWIDE : Restaurant Will Donate Leftovers

After shutting down its kitchen at the close of business Sunday, the Ranch House in Ojai often tosses out uncooked meat, fish and produce that won’t stay fresh until the restaurant reopens Wednesday.

Food Share Inc. has stepped forward to make use of the discards. Beginning in July, the Oxnard-based food bank will pick up fresh and prepared leftovers from the Ranch House and other restaurants and cafeterias countywide.

“We’re more than willing to help as much as we can,” said David Skaggs, Ranch House manager. “I just wish there were more of this being done.”

Food Share, which provides donated and surplus food to about 90,000 people each month, is purchasing a $25,000 refrigerated truck to carry food at below 40 degrees. Its driver will make pickups from food-service businesses and same-day deliveries to agencies that provide meals for the needy.

Susan Hixon, Food Share’s resource development manager, said nearly 25 agencies have asked about receiving some of the restaurant leftovers.
