SOUTH-CENTRAL : Animal Shelter Emptied Pending Quake Inspection
About 100 dogs and cats at the South-Central Los Angeles animal shelter have been transferred to other facilities pending an inspection for possible structural damage caused by an earthquake this week, officials said Friday.
The 43-year-old shelter has unreinforced brick structures and a badly cracked roof, which could present a risk to the staff and animals, Los Angeles Animal Regulation Department spokesman James Connelly said.
The animals were transferred to the city’s North-Central, East Valley, West Valley and West Los Angeles facilities pending the completion of the inspection sometime next week, Connelly said.
City officials hope to reinforce the South-Central shelter later this year, Connelly said.
