A 28-year-old man was shot to death in Orange Park Acres late Thursday night, apparently by a man riding in his car, authorities said.

Jose Chanelo Antunez of Santa Ana was pronounced dead at the scene on the 20000 block of Chapman Avenue, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Orange police officers responded to the call at 11 p.m. and turned the case over to the Sheriff’s Department after determining that the shooting occurred in unincorporated county territory.

Sheriff’s Lt. Richard J. Olson said information was sketchy Friday because of the transfer of the case between police agencies. It was not clear whether Antunez or the gunman was driving, but investigators believe the second man drove off after the shooting.

Antunez, who had been shot several times, was found lying along the north side of Chapman Avenue.

Information from the Orange Police Department indicated that the men had pulled into a large turnout there and had an argument, after which the victim was shot.

A description of the suspect or the car was not immediately available.
