Driver Killed as Car Spins Out

A 21-year-old La Habra man was fatally injured Saturday evening when his sports car spun out of control, slid down an embankment and landed upside down in a drainage ravine, authorities said.

The man, Scott J. Irving, was driving a Mazda RX-7 north on Idaho Street just south of Sandalwood Avenue about 5:20 p.m., Police Sgt. Matt Stoner said.

Irving was ejected from the car, possibly through the sunroof, and thrown about 30 feet over the barbed wire on top of a chain-link fence, Stoner said.

Police are unsure how fast Irving was driving, he added.

Onlookers called police, who pronounced Irving dead at the scene.

The road was not busy, and there were no other vehicles involved in the accident, which is under investigation, Stoner said.
