NEWPORT BEACH : Council OKs Signs on Mariners Mile

Share

Visitors to the city’s Mariners Mile may soon see welcome signs at either end of the district.

The signs pointing the way to the nautical village have been long planned by the village merchants’ association and last week received approval and funding from the City Council. The district is home to some of the city’s most popular restaurants, boutiques, auto dealerships and yacht brokers.

The signs will be placed at two locations along the strip--at Dover Drive on the east end, and for those arriving from the west, the welcome will be just before the Newport Boulevard bridge over Coast Highway.

The association and the city will each pay $2,121 for the signs, which will read “Mariners Mile” and show a ship’s helm and two crossed flags.

The signs must be approved by the California Department of Transportation before they can be put in place.
