A 29-year-old transient had his left leg severed by a train in Oxnard on Sunday afternoon, police said.

The victim, who has not been identified, was in serious condition at St. John’s Regional Medical Center on Sunday night, Oxnard Police Lt. Jeff Young said.

The victim’s leg was cut off just above the knee, Young said.

“He told the doctor that he was trying to outrun the train for some reason,” Young said. “We don’t know if he fell or what.”

A security guard called authorities about 4:30 p.m. and reported a man lying by the train tracks near the Oxnard Transportation Center several blocks east of Oxnard Boulevard, Police Officer Wendy Gietzen said. No one witnessed the accident, Gietzen said.

A Southern Pacific train with 115 cars hit the victim, Gietzen said. Police did not know where the train originated from or what its destination was.
