Share

Reacting to the recent violence, looting and arson that gripped Los Angeles, concerned UC Irvine students will hold a forum today on the riots and the social forces surrounding them.

The two-hour panel discussion will start at 3:30 p.m. in Emerald Bay Room B of the campus student center, according to Chris McSorley, a student coordinator of the event.

The forum is sponsored by students in UCI’s Global Peace and Conflict Studies program and the campus chapter of Amnesty International.

“We decided we really need to do something constructive about the riots, and to try to promote some sort of understanding,” said McSorley, a member of the GPACS student club. “We were all agreed that it was senseless violence, and we were having a hard time understanding how it could get started.”

Panelists will include Eli Reyna, a specialist in police and community contact with the Orange County Human Relations Commission; Joseph L. Graves, a UCI assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, and Mark P. Petracca, a UCI assistant professor of political science.

The student center is on Pereira Drive, near Bridge Road on campus. For more information, call (714) 856-6410.
