A man turned himself in to authorities Tuesday and was being held at County Jail in the killing of his 18-year-old son, officials said.

Nolan Paul Jackson Sr., 37, gave himself up to officials of San Diego County’s Mental Health Department. He had been sought by police in the death of Nolan Paul Jackson Jr., who reportedly died while trying to break up a fight between his mother and father, who are estranged.

The younger Jackson was found dead at the Jackson family home in the 4600 block of Thorn Street in City Heights on Monday. He had been shot once in the chest, Lt. John Welter said.

The boy’s mother, Beverly Jackson, 34, was found with head injuries from a beating, Welter said. She was taken to Villa View Community Hospital, where she received stitches and was released, hospital spokeswoman Eileen Smith said.

Both the 18-year-old and his 13-year-old brother, Jeremiah, had attempted to keep their father from beating their mother, Welter said. The 13-year-old witnessed the shooting, as did 8-year-old Cedric, police said.

Police were called to the Jackson home after reports of a domestic disturbance and the sound of gunfire.

The elder Jackson fled the house after the shooting. Police had been called to the Jackson family home for domestic disturbances more than once in the last six months, and Beverly Jackson had secured a restraining order against her estranged husband, Welter said.
