COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Five-Run Fifth Helps UC Irvine Defeat Chapman
Billy Bardens and Joe Furukawa each had three hits and a run batted in as UC Irvine beat Chapman, 9-7, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at Irvine.
Irvine (22-25) scored four runs in the third inning and five in the fifth on its way to the victory, which ended a two-game losing streak. Senior Mike Calvert (3-3) pitched seven innings for the victory.
Trevor Rush was three for four with a double and scored three runs for Chapman (29-22), which has lost six in a row.
With two outs in the ninth, Irvine relief pitcher Jon Rust forced Kevin Monson, who represented the tying run, to fly out to center.
In the Big West Conference golf championships:
UC Irvine finishes seventh--Nevada Las Vegas won its first Big West Conference golf title. UNLV had a 54-hole total of 855 at Sandpiper Golf Course in Goleta, six shots better than runner-up San Jose State. UC Irvine ended in seventh place at 983.
Warren Schutte of UNLV won the individual title with a 10-under 206. Teammate Monte Montgomery was second at 212.
