A train collided with a car late Thursday night, killing at least one person, authorities said.

Details of the collision were sketchy, but police said the accident occurred about 10:30 p.m. at the railroad crossing at 4th Street.

Police said the northbound Amtrak train was preparing to stop at the Santa Ana depot when it struck the car, which was traveling west on 4th Street.

The driver of the car apparently skirted the railroad warning gate and ignored the flashing lights, police said.

A Santa Ana Fire Department dispatcher said one person was trapped in the car and firefighters were trying to pull that victim from the wreckage.

Police said a second person in the car was killed instantly.
