San Diego : Pollution Closes Part of Surfer Beach

Share

Water samples with high amounts of bacteria forced officials on Tuesday to close parts of Tourmaline Surfing Park in Pacific Beach, the county Department of Health Services announced.

The bacteria have been coming from a ditch that empties into the ocean, said Dan Avera, a county spokesman.

Signs warning of water contamination have been posted where the ditch meets the ocean and for 300 feet to the north and south of the ditch, Avera said. Samples have indicated that the water is unsafe for body contact, he said.

The source of the contamination is unknown, and the posted areas will remain in place until the bacterial levels fall, Avera said.

Tourmaline Surfing Park is a surfing-only beach. The beach was designated for surfers because of its rock bottom, which poses a safety threat to swimmers.
