ROUNDUP : Hart Wins on 7th-Inning Single

Gary Stephenson’s one-out single in the seventh inning scored John Aguilar to give Hart High a 5-4 victory over visiting Alhambra on Tuesday in a Foothill League baseball game.

Stephenson (7-2), a junior right-hander, also threw a five-hitter. The Indians (20-2, 13-0 in league play) are ranked No. 1 in The Times’ regional poll.

Rio Mesa 4, Buena 2--Jeff Howatt tossed a six-hitter and struck out nine to lead host Rio Mesa (16-5-2, 11-2) to its third consecutive Channel League title and fourth in the past five years. The Spartans have won 11 of the past 13 league championships.

Hueneme 1, Ventura 0--Marco Grajales (6-2) threw a six-hitter and outdueled Chris Mace in a Channel League game at Ventura. Grajales struck out seven and walked one for Hueneme (13-9-1, 6-6-1), which scored on a single by Juan Ponce--Hueneme’s only hit.

Hoover 7, Crescenta Valley 6--Don Kinney’s two-run single with one out in the seventh inning capped a superb comeback for host Hoover in the Pacific League game. Hoover (11-8-1, 6-7-1) trailed, 6-0, after five innings.

Calabasas 6, Santa Paula 5--Mark Warshaw’s pinch-hit single provided host Calabasas (9-11, 5-7) with the eventual winning run in a Frontier League game.

Moorpark 6, Carpinteria 4--Richard Hernandez hit his first home run and improved to 4-0 as a pitcher for host Moorpark (17-2, 11-1) in a Tri-Valley League finale.

Oak Park 11, St. Bonaventure 10--Kevin Pryor of Oak Park (12-7, 6-4) was four for four in the Tri-Valley League game.

Palmdale 10-10, Ridgecrest Burroughs 1-0--Freshman Chris Paxton had three hits in each game to spark Palmdale (13-10, 8-6) to a Golden League sweep.

Saugus 10, Antelope Valley 4--Jayme Riggio was three for five with two runs and three RBIs to lead visiting Saugus (19-3-1, 13-0) in a Golden League game. Eric Cole homered for Antelope Valley.

Fillmore 6, Nordhoff 2--Pitcher Louie Garza threw a three-hitter and went two for four to lead Fillmore (13-4-1, 7-3-1) in a Frontier League game.

Grant 25, North Hollywood 5--Rodney Robinson was four for five and drove in seven runs in an East Valley League rout at Grant.

Monroe 5, Birmingham 3 (10 innings)--Noel Toledo and Christian Ascencio each had three hits for Monroe (15-3-1, 13-2) in a Mid-Valley League game.

Canyon 10, Quartz Hill 4--Adam Vance was three for four and Chad Engbrecht had two hits, including a home run, for host Canyon (9-13, 7-7) in a Golden League game.

Van Nuys 5, Canoga Park 1--Patrick Alvarado and Voltaire Baltazar each had three hits to lead Van Nuys (11-8, 8-7) in a Mid-Valley League game.

TENNIS

Mission League doubles championship--Notre Dame’s Carlos Paredes and Matt Kirchner defeated Bishop Montgomery’s J.P. Dupree and Virgil De Los Santos, 6-2, 6-4, to win the league title.

HIGH SCHOOL GOLF

City Section championships--Elise Kimm of Grant shot a three-over 75 to lead Grant to an 11-stroke lead at the midpoint of the City finals at Wilson Golf Course.

SOFTBALL

Simi Valley 2, Agoura 0--Sara Griffin, out for three weeks with a shoulder injury, earned the win for Simi Valley (22-2, 13-1) in a Marmonte League game.

Saugus 2, Antelope Valley 0--Kerry Coudry threw a no-hitter for host Saugus (22-2, 8-1) in a Golden League game.

Thousand Oaks 8, Royal 0--Nicole Ochoa hit a three-run home run for Thousand Oaks (18-4, 12-1) in a Marmonte League game.

Hart 4, Burroughs 1--Lauren Fenstemaker limited visiting Burroughs to six singles as Hart (17-7, 9-0) clinched its sixth consecutive Foothill League title.

Hoover 1, Arcadia 0 (12 innings)--Nancy Evans (20-2) allowed two hits, struck out 27 and walked none for Hoover (20-2, 8-0) in a Pacific League game.

Glendale 6, Pasadena 0--Junior right-hander Cyndee Bennett (7-4) threw a no-hitter and struck out 12 for Glendale (13-6, 7-3) in a Pacific League game. Jenny Dalton hit her seventh home run this season, the 27th of her career.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Granada Hills 20, Carson 9 1/2--Casey Wood, Granada Hills’ No. 1 singles player, won all four matches in the quarterfinals of the City Section team playoffs.
