Countywide : 4 Nonprofit Groups Given $5,000 Grants
Four nonprofit organizations in Ventura County received Community Partnership Awards on Wednesday from the Los Angeles Times Valley and Ventura County editions.
The organizations received $5,000 grants at an awards luncheon in Woodland Hills. Grants also went to six organizations in the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys.
One of the recipients was Special Awareness Computer Center of Simi Valley, which provides information about computer training and technology to people with mental or physical disabilities.
The organization, formed in 1989, operates through the volunteer efforts of six people, who work out of office space donated by Simi Valley Hospital.
“We give people the independence to do the things they need to do,” said Suzanne Feit, director of the center. She said the grant will subsidize computer training for clients.
The other local recipients include:
* Long Term Care Services of Ventura County, a Ventura-based ombudsman program that ensures that elderly people in nursing homes receive adequate care by investigating complaints.
* Conejo Free Clinic, a Thousand Oaks medical clinic for people who cannot afford private care.
* Boys & Girls Club of Ventura, which offers Club Sandwich, a lunchtime physical education program for youths at two Ventura elementary schools.
