LOS ANGELES : 310 Telephone Area Code Goes Into Effect Today
People trying to call more than 2 million Southern California residents today must punch up the new 310 telephone area code.
A burgeoning population, facsimile machines, beepers, personal computers and cellular phones compelled telephone companies to split off a portion of the 213 area.
It’s the region’s sixth code, and a seventh is on the way. In November, a chunk of the 714 area code will be split off to become 909.
The 310 area code went into effect last November, but there was a six-month grace period--plus an additional two-week delay because of the Los Angeles rioting.
The 310 area stretches along the coast from Malibu to Santa Monica and includes Marina del Rey, South Bay cities and Long Beach. It extends inland as far as Whittier and includes Beverly Hills and Century City. Beginning today, errant callers into the 310 area will receive a recording giving the new area code.
