LOS ANGELES : Riordan Launches Drive to Limit City Officials’ Terms
Recreation and Parks Commissioner Richard Riordan has launched a campaign to limit future mayors and City Council members to two four-year terms in office.
Riordan, who is considering a run for mayor next year, submitted the proposal last week at City Hall.
The proposal would need more than 175,000 signatures, or 15% of the city’s registered voters, to qualify for the April, 1993, municipal ballot. Nine City Council members and Mayor Tom Bradley have served more than two terms, but the measure would not apply retroactively.
Political observers said they believe that Riordan, an influential downtown lawyer, hopes to use the initiative as a leading issue when he runs for mayor on the same April ballot.
But Riordan said that he has not decided to run for the post and that the term-limit initiative is unconnected.
