SAN DIEGO : Bank Robber Leaves Fake Bomb Behind

A busy downtown intersection was blocked off Wednesday morning after a man robbed a bank using a device that looked like a bomb, San Diego police said.
Traffic in the 100 block of West Broadway was cordoned off shortly before noon after a man walked into the Wells Fargo Bank at 101 W. Broadway, placed a package on the counter and handed a teller a note demanding money, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.
The man said he had a remote bomb detonator in his pocket and would use it if the teller did not comply, Robinson said.
The robber, described as 5-foot-9, 170 pounds, white and wearing a blue T-shirt and aviator glasses, took $1,380 and fled east on Broadway, leaving the package behind, Robinson said.
Police were called in to examine the package, wrapped in black tape with wires, and evacuated the bank and the block when they determined that the package might be explosive, Robinson said.
About an hour later, police found that the package contained a block of wood and a battery, Robinson said.
