SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Ventura County publishers will be much in evidence at the annual convening of the American Booksellers Assn. trade show, which will begin tomorrow and continue through May 26 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Orange County. Monroe Press, Glastonbury, Moon River, Times Change Press and Pathfinder Publishing will join hundreds of colleagues from around the world to display their wares for thousands of bookstore owners from every corner of America.

The ABA Convention, which changes venues each May, is a frenzied affair for creators and purveyors of the printed word. The aisles are jammed with booksellers seeking titles to stock their stores. The booths are crammed with books, posters and huge displays hyping every kind of literary endeavor.

Dr. Monte Elchoness and Dorothy Towvim of Monroe Press will feature their latest book “Why Do Kids Need Feelings?” at their booth. The Ventura couple established the publishing company in 1985 and among other titles produced the best-selling “Why Can’t Anyone Hear Me? A Guide for Surviving Adolescence” written by Dr. Elchoness.

Moon River’s author David Rives, whose “Walk Yourself Thin” hit the bestseller lists, has penned “Dying for a Smoke” which will be displayed in the Berkeley publishing booth. Lamar Hoover of Times Change Press says its lead title is “Pillow Mountain: Notes on Inhabiting a Living Planet” by Ojai writer Michael Bridge.

Children’s books, nonfiction titles and calendars will be on display by Glastonbury Press in their booth. Pathfinder’s latest titles are “Life with Charlie” a book about coping with mental illness including Alzheimer’s, and “Final Celebrations: A Guide for Personal and Family Funeral Planning.”

Editors and agents, publishers, writers and booksellers will participate in breakfast and dinner banquets and seminars--along with world leaders and celebrity authors including former President Jimmy Carter, Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, Garrison Keillor, Sue Grafton, Oriana Fallaci, Stephen King, Amy Tan, Robert Fulghum, Jackie Collins and Louise Erdrich.

One-day passes to the trade exhibit will be available for on-site purchase. Contact the ABA show office, Anaheim Convention Center at (714) 999-9999.

As we promised last week, the Ojai Film Society will present the 1990 film “Chameleon Street,” directed by, written by and starring Wendell B. Harris Jr.

The film, based on a true story, centers around William Douglas Street Jr., who lives by the sentiment, “I think, therefore I scam.”

The movie did not fare well in theaters, but it did pick up the Grand Prize at the 1990 U.S. Film Festival.

Show time at the Ojai Playhouse is 4:30 p.m. The theater is located at 145 E. Ojai Ave. Admission is $6.

A video from Turner Home Entertainment arrived in the mail the other day. It won’t be available in the stores until next month, but we decided to let you have a sneak preview.

It’s the family-oriented, full-length animated feature “Mission to Earth,” the latest in the Captain Planet and the Planeteers series. In this installment, the captain and his crew crusade against eco-villains, trying to prevent global warming, toxic dumping and other activities harmful to their planet.
