The percentage of registered voters voting in primary elections in California has generally declined since the late 1970s, according to figures compiled by the secretary of state. PRIMARY: REGISTERED VOTER TURNOUT June 8, 1976: 72.60% June 6, 1978: 68.88% June 3, 1980: 63.34% June 8, 1982: 52.73% June 5, 1984: 48.65% June 3, 1986: 40.45% June 7, 1988: 48.16% June 5, 1990: 41.49% Source: California secretary of state
