The City Council has approved a plan to waive demolition fees on buildings that must be destroyed because of damage sustained during the recent rioting.

The Department of Building and Safety and the city attorney’s office is preparing an ordinance that will also allow the waiver of other building permit fees in hardship cases.

In addition, the council endorsed a resolution calling on Agriculture Secretary Edward Madigan to approve an emergency food stamp program for people hardest hit by the riots. Under the program, those who live in riot-torn areas would be eligible for food stamps immediately.
