18 Fullerton College Students Awarded Scholarships

Eighteen students at Fullerton College shared $3,575 in scholarships and certificates presented by the college business and computer information systems division.

The recipients are: Amanda Cain, La Habra; Robert M. Wise and Patrick J. Marshall, Buena Park; Amy M. Yuan, Shawn E. Nelson and Anh T. Nguyen, Anaheim; Tiffany D. Ensign, Orange; Eng G. Kathleen Tan, Santa Ana; Stephen Wunderlich and Diana Johnson, Placentia, and Jane Lee, Yorba Linda.

Also: Vivian M.N. Nguyen, Hahn T. Tran, Susan J. Ritz, Marcella A. Yearwood and Winnie Y.Y. Soo, Fullerton; Todd R. Eggertsen, Brea, and Diana D.B. An, Garden Grove.

Sandy Amoroso of Placentia has been named the first recipient of the St. Jude Community Service Award, which recognizes an employee who has made outstanding contributions to the community.

Amoroso, a medical records technician who has offered her help to women serving prison sentences and helped their families since the early 1970s, received $500 for the honor.

She donated the money to Casa Frontera, a group that provides assistance to families of women in prison.

Rick Olson, an El Toro resident and machine technology student at Orange Coast College, placed first in the recent California Skill Olympics sponsored by the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America. He won the precision machining category.

Jeffrey Dill, of Tustin was honored as valedictorian of the recent graduating class of Western State University College of Law.

John Paul Brusky of Laguna Beach was awarded his Boy Scout Eagle rank in a court of honor at Laguna Beach Presbyterian Church.

The UC Irvine freshman, along with other Scouts, helped paint and renovate the house of a senior citizen with money donated by St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church and the Exchange Club of Laguna Beach.

A member of Troop 35, he is the son of Carole and John Brusky.

Fullerton resident Donna Hatchett, who has been director of public affairs for the North Orange County Community College District since 1987, has won the All-Pro Award, the top honor in state community college public relations.

She was recognized for exemplary performance in media relations, marketing, communications and professional development.

Eric Arnold, 29, who said he found a place to explore, make changes and find direction in his life, has received the Golden West College Student of the Year Award.

“The learning environment here has given me the opportunity to find new options, uncover skills and talents, make some mistakes, find out what I like and develop myself,” said Arnold, a Garden Grove resident.

He received a $1,000 scholarship, which he will use at San Francisco State University.

Fullerton resident Rennea Connolly, an active volunteer, has been named 1992 Catholic Woman of the Year by the Catholic Charities Auxiliary of Orange County.

The mother of three sons, she was selected for outstanding service to volunteer work that stresses family, church and community.

Connolly, who was selected for the honor from 33 candidates, was nominated by the Women’s Council of St. Philip Benizi Church in Fullerton.

And Jason Piazza, 16, of Costa Mesa, who helped reroof the pony stables at Fairview State Hospital as his service project, received his Boy Scout Eagle rank at ceremonies held at Orange Coast College. He is a junior at Estancia High School.

After an extensive and competitive process, the Industrial League of Orange County has selected three graduating high school seniors in the county to share $10,000 in scholarships.

The winners are Linda Chien, University High in Irvine; Christopher McDonald, Santa Margarita High in Rancho Santa Margarita, and Angela Robinson, Costa Mesa High in Costa Mesa. The scholarships are provided to encourage students to seek careers in business, according to league spokeswoman Beverly R. McClure.

Former Rancho Santiago College students Don Anderson and John Dawdon have been inducted into the college Hall of Fame for bringing distinction to themselves, their community, profession and school.

Anderson, who attended Rancho Santiago in 1958-60, is executive director of the Orange County Sports Assn. Dawdon retired last year as a trustee of the college district.
