A Split Decision

I read your article about the two all-sports stations heard in Los Angeles with fascination and a small portion of incredulity (“The Sporting News,” by Steve Weinstein, May 10).

Last year, an article in one of the industry trade letters hailed KMPC as an AM success story, with billings over $16 million and costs cut to the bone.

The ratings appeared stable, running from a 2.8 in the summer to a 2.4 in the winter over the last two years. As the No. 1-rated station only had a 5.0 and the No. 6 station was at 3.8, you can see that KMPC was very competitive.

Meanwhile, after all the time it has been all-sports, XTRA was just a 0.4 in the winter book, 38th in the L.A. market. And WEEI in Boston, which is owned by the Celtics and switched from all-news to all-sports, is dying and can’t find a buyer, according to the Boston Globe.

And finally, if that music is so unattractive, why is KMPC advertising that its sister FM station K-LITE is now playing it?

Aside from that, your article was a wonderful piece of hype.
