Free Fishing Day--Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve will sponsor a free fishing day Saturday at Shellmaker Island, off Backbay Drive at the reserve.

There will be fishing demonstrations and touch tanks with bay creatures, and prize drawings. Also, rods and reels will be available for loan.

Naturalists and park rangers will be on hand to answer questions. Activities will run from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. For more information, call (714) 640-6746.

Bay Tours--The Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve will also be the site of a naturalist-led tour of the Back Bay area beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The tour lasts about one hour and 15 minutes. The cost is $2.50.

Those who would like to participate are asked to meet at Backbay and Eastbluff drives in Newport Beach. For more information, call (714) 640-6746.

Wetlands Tours--Public tours of the Bolsa Chica wetlands will also be held Saturday morning. The tours, sponsored by Amigos de Bolsa Chica, will depart every 20 minutes from the wetlands’ ecological reserve beginning at 9 a.m.

The last guided tour will depart at 10:30 a.m. Each tour lasts about 1 1/2 hours.

Many spring migrant bird species are now making their homes at the reserve and will be on view during the tours.

Those who would like to take the tour are asked to meet at the ecological reserve on Pacific Coast Highway about half a mile south of Warner Avenue, across from Bolsa Chica State Beach.
