Notes on a Scorecard - June 3, 1992

The Stanley Cup finals are over and the NCAA basketball tournament ended 58 days ago, so it must be time to start the NBA championship series. . . .

No team has won as many as two consecutive World Series since the 1978 New York Yankees, but 10 of the last 18 Stanley Cup winners have been repeaters. . . .

The two-time champion Pittsburgh Penguins might make this a habit. Jaromir Jagr is 20, Mario Lemieux 26, Tom Barrasso 27, and Kevin Stevens 27. . . .

You hate hockey when you see Chris Chelios assault a defenseless Larry Murphy on the ice--and love it a couple of nights later when you see handshakes and hugs exchanged in the traditional ceremony after the last game of the series. . . .

There also is nothing quite like the postgame celebration when the captain skates around the rink with the Stanley Cup held high over his head. It sure beats watching those champagne dousings in the locker room. . . .

The performance of hot-and-cold Scottie Pippen could be the deciding factor in the Chicago Bull-Portland Trail Blazer series. Remember, he was terrific in the finals against the Lakers last year. . . .

Look-alikes: Phil Nevin and Bret Saberhagen. . . .

This time the Dodgers didn’t make a mistake with their first-round pick in the amateur draft. They didn’t have one. But two of their selections, catcher Ryan Luzinski and UCLA outfielder Michael Moore, had been expected to go as high as the first round. Some teams reportedly stayed away because they thought the signing bonuses would be too stiff. . . .

Alvin Davis, who played his first eight major league seasons with the Seattle Mariners, will be honored in ceremonies before the Angel-Mariner game June 25 at the Kingdome. . . .

Sometimes TV graphics get too fancy. They tell you a batter’s average for April and for May, but not for the season. . . .

After Monday’s games, the first four batters in the San Diego Padre lineup were among the top six hitters in the National League. . . .

For the record: Gail Goodrich signed with the New Orleans Jazz as a free agent after the 1975-76 season. As part of the compensation, New Orleans awarded the Lakers its first-round selection in the 1979 draft. With that pick, the Lakers took Magic Johnson. . . .

Ken Dryden is the goaltender on the all-time NHL team that was selected recently. . . .

Angel Martinez of San Gabriel High, who is favored to win the 3,200 meters in the State track and field meet Saturday at Cerritos College, will be the first member of his family to graduate from high school. . . .

The Central Scouting Bureau ranks left winger Ryan Sittler, son of Darryl, the fourth-best prospect for the NHL draft June 20 and right winger Valeri Bure, brother of Pavel, the 18th-best. . . .

It should not be long before Brad Greenberg, the Portland Trail Blazers’ director of player personnel and former Clipper assistant coach, lands a general manager’s job in the NBA. . . .

Some UCLA basketball season ticket-holders are being required to make an annual contribution of at least $750 to the Bruin Athletic Club in order to retain choice seats. Their option is to relocate in the upper level at Pauley Pavilion without making a donation. . . .

Five former Bruins--goalkeeper Brad Fiedel, midfielder Joe-Max Moore, midfielder Chris Henderson, defender Mike Lapper and forward Cobie Jones--have made the U.S. Olympic soccer team. . . .

Three former USC golfers are in the top 10 in money winnings on the Ben Hogan Tour--No. 1 Brian Henninger, No. 2 John Flannery, and No. 10 Jeff Hart. . . .

Jim Young, who did a good job as head football coach at Arizona and Army, has returned to Arizona as an assistant coach in charge of offensive tackles. . . .

George Raveling has coached three guards who appeared in the NBA conference championship series--Craig Ehlo at Washington State, B.J. Armstrong at Iowa and Robert Pack at USC. . . .

The Anti-Defamation League will honor agent Leigh Steinberg at a dinner Thursday night at the Regent Beverly Wilshire hotel. . . .

The feuds between local personalities are kid stuff compared to the one between rival sportscasters Sam Balter and Bob Kelley in the good old days of L.A. radio. . . .

This French Open ranks right up there with Wimbledon--in rain delays. . . .

The new team of John McEnroe and Andre Agassi could make doubles a big draw. . . .

Ram quarterback Jim Everett is undergoing a strenuous off-season conditioning program and is determined to come to training camp in the best shape of his career. . . .

I wonder if the Colorado Rockies and Florida Marlins drafted the best player available or for specific need.
