A 6-year-old girl was killed and her mother was critically injured when fire swept through their apartment in Southeast Los Angeles, authorities said Thursday.
Maria Martinez was found dead in her bedroom after firefighters extinguished the blaze at 11:39 p.m. Wednesday in the 1600 block of East 41st Place, said Mike Little, a Fire Department spokesman.
Her mother, Patricia Martinez, 23, was in critical condition at County-USC Medical Center with third-degree burns on her body and respiratory problems, said Detective Kenny Wheeler of the LAPD.
Martinez managed to carry her uninjured 2-year-old son, Martin, out of their burning home, Wheeler said.
The cause of the blaze, which appeared to be accidental, was under investigation. Damage to the building and its contents was estimated at $23,000.
