Cal State Northridge junior Garrett Noel earned All-American honors by unleashing a javelin throw of 219 feet 8 inches in the NCAA Division I track and field championships Friday at the University of Texas in Austin.

Noel, a Crespi High graduate, placed eighth overall.

Sprinter Charlotte Vines of Northridge finished eighth in her semifinal in the women’s 100-meter dash and failed to make today’s final.

In the javelin, Art Skipper of Oregon had a throw of 248-7 to beat out UCLA’s David Bunevacs (242-11) for first place.

Noel became the second male Northridge track athlete to earn Division I All-American honors.

Shawn Denton placed eighth in the javelin in the 1985 Division I meet after earlier winning the Division II title.

The top eight American-born performers in the competition automatically earn All-American honors.

Noel had the sixth-best qualifying mark entering the event.

Noel (6-foot-2, 210 pounds) is the Northridge record-holder in the javelin with a toss of 234-1.

In the women’s 100 meters, Vines finished in 11.67 seconds, well behind the first-place mark of Chryste Gaines of Stanford (10.90).

The top two finishers plus the next four fastest from the two semifinal races advanced to the final.

The mark was a personal best for Vines, a 5-foot-4 junior from San Marcos High in Santa Barbara.

Vines matched her previous personal best Thursday in the third heat with a time of 11.68 to place fifth.

Vines edged Zundra Feagin of Nevada Las Vegas for the 16th and final berth in the semifinals.

Vines’ best mark in 1991 was 11.74.
