Mary Joe Fernandez made it to the final of the Beckenham grass court tournament when fellow American Pam Shriver pulled out of their semifinal match in the second set with a shoulder injury.
Third-seed Helena Sukova advanced to the final with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Mana Endo of Japan.
In the men’s singles, top-seeded Ivan Lendl defeated ninth-seeded Patrick Kuhnen of Germany, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), to advance to a semifinal match with fourth-seeded South African Christo Van Rensburg, who defeated fifth-seeded Shuzo Matsuoka, 6-3, 6-2.
David Wheaton will play Brad Gilbert in the other semifinal after defeating unseeded South African Robbie Koenig, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). Gilbert ousted Britain’s Jeremy Bates, 6-2, 7-5, to reach the semifinal.
