SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A 29-year-old San Diego man was critically injured Monday after he was shot in the head with an arrow while he slept, in an incident in which his roommate has been arrested.

Arthur Ekvall told police he awoke about 4:50 a.m. feeling pain in his head and turned on the light to discover his roommate reloading a crossbow with an arrow, San Diego police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

Ekvall had already been shot with one arrow, which entered the lower back of his head and nearly went out the other side over his left eye, Robinson said.

Ekvall underwent surgery to remove the arrow and was in critical condition in the intensive care unit of Mercy Hospital, hospital spokesman Michael Scahill said.

Robinson said Ekvall managed to get out of bed and wrestle the crossbow away from the roommate, identified as Jesse Solis, 25.

Ekvall ran to the apartment manager’s office for help and was taken to Mercy Hospital by ambulance.

Meanwhile, Solis fled the residence, in the 3000 block of Meade Avenue, in Ekvall’s truck, Robinson said.

El Cajon police spotted the truck about 6 a.m. in the 500 block of Ann Street and arrested Solis, Robinson said. Solis was booked into County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and auto theft, Robinson said.

It was not immediately clear what sparked the attack, he said.
