4 Die in Traffic Accidents in County Over Weekend

Four people were killed and several were injured in four traffic accidents in San Diego County over the weekend, officials said.

Simon Calvillo, 22, of Val Verde in Los Angeles County was killed when the van he was driving swerved and rolled over several times at 7:05 a.m. Sunday, California Highway Patrol dispatcher Mike Collier said.

The windshield popped out and Calvillo was thrown from the vehicle, which was heading south on Interstate 805 north of Imperial Avenue, the CHP said.

Four passengers who had been sleeping were thrown through the back door, which opened on impact. They were treated at hospitals for moderate injuries, Collier said.

The passengers were identified as Adriana Sanchez, 16, of North Hollywood, and Maria Garcia, 67; Fausto Fernandez, 23, and Eloi Gonzales, 41, all of Val Verde.

Earlier Sunday, a 23-year-old man was killed when he was thrown from the car in which he was a passenger.

Shannon Fox was in a car going south in the 600 block of Bay Boulevard when the driver lost control on a curve at 2:56 a.m., Chula Vista Police Lt. Jim Zoll said. The car overturned several times. Fox, whose residence was not known, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, whose name was withheld, was taken by helicopter to UCSD Medical Center. Another passenger also was airlifted to UCSD Medical Center, and a fourth person was treated at Mercy Hospital for minor injuries, Zoll said.

About 6 p.m. Saturday, a 34-year-old Poway man was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle and was thrown off it on a steep, rocky dirt trail east of Acton Avenue and South E Street, authorities said.

Daniel E. Dillon died at the scene, Sheriff’s dispatcher Chris Hinshaw reported.

A Rancho Santa Fe man was arrested in connection with a fatal crash at 2:15 a.m. Saturday on Black Mountain Road south of Rancho Bernardo Road, the CHP said.

Christopher Daniels, 21, is being held for investigation of vehicular manslaughter, gross negligence and felony drunk driving in the accident that killed one passenger and injured four others, including Daniels, Collier said.

In that crash, Daniels’ Jeep was southbound on a dirt stretch of Black Mountain Road when he ran down an embankment on a curve, the CHP said. Daniels had been speeding, the CHP said.

All five people in the vehicle were thrown from it. None was wearing a seat belt.

Jamie Brown, 21, of San Diego was dead at the scene, the medical examiner’s office said. Daniels was arrested and treated at Pomerado Hospital for moderate injuries, Collier said.

Also injured were Jesse Barger, 22, of Poway; Steven Blackwood, 21, of San Diego and Paige Baker, 24, of San Diego, officials said. Blackwood and Baker were treated at Palomar Medical Center and released. Barger was listed in good condition at Palomar on Monday.
