Share

A 20-year-old Santa Paula fieldworker was shot several times with shotgun pellets after he and two cousins confronted a number of assailants who had been throwing rocks at them, police said Monday.

The incident, which occurred about 11 p.m. Sunday near the 1300 block of Orchard Street in Santa Paula, left Jose Alejos with several superficial shotgun wounds, Santa Paula Police Cmdr. Bob Gonzales said.

Alejos was taken to Santa Paula Memorial Hospital after the shooting and was treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

“We are still following this up right now, but it seems very uncommon, the way this thing went down,” Gonzales said. “We are not sure whether any of the subjects involved in this incident even knew each other.”
