Authorities Monday identified a scuba diver whose body was found off Santa Catalina Island over the weekend.

Edward Hayes, 71, of Glendora and a 40-year-old unidentified companion entered Catalina Harbor between 3:45 and 4 p.m. Saturday, then split up to search for abalone, said Deputy Irma Becerra of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The younger diver came back to the boat later and waited for Hayes, and then notified the Coast Guard.

The man continued the search for his companion, found him at a depth of 35 feet and brought the body to the surface, Becerra said. Los Angeles County lifeguard paramedics pronounced Hayes dead at 6:15 p.m. Saturday. Catalina Harbor is on the northwest side of the island, about 10 miles from Avalon.
