SAN CLEMENTE : Coyote Captured in Leg Trap, Killed

Share

A week after leg traps were set, animal control officials Tuesday captured and killed a coyote that may have been among those menacing the Forster Ranch community.

The animal was discovered Tuesday morning in one of the traps placed in canyons surrounding the housing tract. It was destroyed by a lethal injection and was sent to the county health department for rabies tests, according to San Clemente Councilman Scott Diehl.

“It is important for us to know if we have a (coyote) population that has rabies in it,” Diehl said. The city’s concern with the coyotes stems largely from a May 16 coyote attack on a 5-year-old girl who was playing in her back yard.

Also, in recent weeks numerous pets in the Forster Ranch development have been reported missing or killed by coyotes.
