SPORTS BRIEFS : Marine Stadium Closer to Becoming City Historical Site

Share

The Long Beach Cultural Heritage Commission has approved Marine Stadium as a city historical site and passed the issue along to the Planning Commission for consideration July 16.

If the Planning Commission approves, the proposal will be sent to the City Council in late July. Local approval is required before the state Department of Parks and Recreation will consider whether to declare the site a state landmark.

The inland waterway, which is now used for a variety of water sports, was built to host rowing at the 1932 Olympic Games. It was the first 2,000-meter, man-made rowing venue in the United States.

If the City Council approves the request, an August party is planned at the facility near Alamitos Bay. “All indications are that the city will accept our proposal,” said Larry Goodhue, a city resident and rower who is heading the drive.

Wilson High track and field Coach Therese Butler has been recognized for her contributions to the sport by the CIF Southern Section.

Butler began the Bruins’ girls track program in 1978 and has a dual meet record of 67-8. Wilson has won eight Moore League titles, including seven in a row from 1985-91.

The Bruins finished second to Poly in the Moore League this spring and in the Southern Section finals.

As a cross-country coach, Butler is 68-7. Teams she has coached have won eight league titles and made six appearances in the Southern Section finals.

John Brennan of Wilson and Mark Rose of Lakewood will coach the East, and Mike Roarke of Cypress Brethren Christian and Willie Donerson of Dominguez will coach the West in the 25th 605 All-Star Football Game. The event, which features most of the top graduated seniors from 38 area schools, will be played June 27 at Cerritos College. The San Gabriel River Freeway (605) is the dividing line between the East and West teams. The West has won four of the last six games.

Mike Weathers, recently appointed as assistant baseball coach at Cal State Long Beach, will be busy running the 49ers’ summer program while Coach Dave Snow is assisting Team USA at the Barcelona Olympics.

Weathers had been head coach at Chapman University. During his nine-year tenure, the Panthers were 210-217 and successfully moved up to the Division I level this past season with a 29-24 overall mark as an independent.

Weathers left Chapman after the school announced that it was dropping to non-scholarhip Division III next year. Said Snow: “I’m thrilled to have someone of his qualifications and experience as the No. 1 assistant.”

Jeff Manson, the 1987 CIF Southern Section golf champion from Millikan High, will be honored June 25 at the section’s annual invitational golf tournament. Longtime section golf Coach Bill Brady of Fountain Valley Los Amigos, and PGA pro Dave Shackelford will also be honored.

Some tee times for the event may still be available. The entry fee is $85 and sponsorship donations are also being accepted. Information: (310) 860-2414.

The CIF Southern and Los Angeles City sections have honored seven area schools with sportsmanship awards for the 1991-92 school year. They are Whitney High of Cerritos, Southeast Lutheran of South Gate, Lakewood, Cerritos Valley Christian, Paramount and Norwalk from the Southern Section and South Gate from the City Section.

The schools were singled out by schools in their respective leagues. The leagues establish their own methods of choosing the sportsmanship winners; however, guidelines from the CIF include enthusiasm, behavior at home and away games, and treatment of opponents and referees. The judging is based on the actions of players, student body, faculty, spectators, cheerleaders, pep squads, bands and drill teams at athletic events.

Ricky Carrigan, a freshman at Compton College, won two events at the recent state community college track finals at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach. Carrigan recorded the nation’s best time (20.56) by a runner from a community college in the 200-meter run. His winning time in the 100 (10.22) was the second-best turned in this year. Both are school records. He also ran a leg on Compton’s 400-meter relay team, which placed second in 40.17, also a school record. Carrigan attended Compton High.

Cerritos will host its “Summer Games” July 16-24 at city parks. Events range from dart throwing to lawn bowling. Fourteen competitions are planned and players will compete for medals. Information: (310) 860-0311.

The Summer Shootout at Artesia High, a basketball tournament for club teams of high school-age boys, will feature many players who are expected to be among the best preps next season. In addition to the state Division II champion Pioneers, Southern Section teams include Irvine University, III-AA Southern Section champion and Division III state champion Inglewood Morningside, Compton Dominguez, Poly, Lakewood, Southern Section I-AA runner-up Lynwood, Southern Section champion I-AA Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley, Pasadena Muir, Huntington Beach Ocean View and Paramount. Also participating from the Los Angeles City Section are 3A Division champion Fremont, Dorsey, Fairfax and 4A champion Westchester. San Diego City Section 4A champion Torrey Pines of Encinitas also will play.

The tournament runs from July 27-31. Information: (310) 926-5566 Ext. 14330.
