Three San Pedro Players Named to All-City 4-A Team

San Pedro High, the City Section 4-A Division champion, placed three players on the All-City 4-A baseball team that included five other South Bay players.

Catcher Jose Duarte, pitcher Jamie Smith and outfielder Mark Miller represented San Pedro on the 21-player team, which was chosen by members of the Amateur Athletic Foundation/First Interstate Bank board of athletics.

Banning and Westchester each had two players selected. Pitcher Carlos Garibay and shortstop Carlos Olea of Banning were chosen, as were third baseman Mike Hayes and shortstop Al Watson of Westchester.

Carson center fielder David Mauney was also selected to the team.

University pitcher Javier Mejia (11-1), whose only loss was to San Pedro in the semifinals, was named 4-A Player of the Year.

All-City players will receive their awards July 8 at Dodger Stadium before to the opening game of the doubleheader between the Dodgers and the Montreal Expos.
