Alan Kulwicki took the lead with 11 laps to go in a track-record 144.069 m.p.h. victory Sunday in the NASCAR Champion Spark Plug 500 at Pocono International Raceway in Long Pond, Pa.
Kulwicki beat Mark Martin by 2.34 seconds over the 2 1/2-mile tri-oval and earned $74,255. Bill Elliott was third, Ken Schrader fourth and Davey Allison fifth.
“We ran a pretty deliberate race,” said Kulwicki, who also won April 5 at Bristol, Tenn. “I had a real good feeling about the way the car was handling.”
Allison’s car slipped off a jack in the final round of pit stops, ruining his chance at victory. He ended up with a 40.6-second stop, and Kulwicki made his in 24.1.
Kulwicki slowed in traffic on lap 185, allowing Elliott and Martin to get past, but he roared back on the homestretch of 190 to get the lead.
