ROUNDUP : Dance Smartly a Nose Short at Woodbine

Making her first start of 1992, Dance Smartly was beaten at 2-5 odds Sunday by longshot Thunder Regent in the $104,670 King Edward Gold Cup at Woodbine in Toronto.

Ridden by Sandy Hawley, Thunder Regent beat Dance Smartly, the 1991 Eclipse Award winner as the best 3-year-old filly, by a nose in 1:46 for the 1 1/8 miles on turf.

Dance Smartly, who had ankle surgery after her win in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, won all eight of her starts last year. She was coupled in the betting Sunday with Tot Of Rum, who finished third.

Mountain Cat took the lead on the turn into the stretch, then drew away for a five-length victory over previously unbeaten Tempered Halo in the Grade III Bashford Manor Stakes for 2-year-olds at Churchill Downs on Sunday.

Mountain Cat, ridden by Charles Woods Jr., covered six furlongs in 1:10 3/5 and paid $6, $3 and $2.80.

It was Mountain Cat’s second victory in three starts. Odds-on favorite Tempered Halo, who had won four consecutive races, returned $2.60 and $2.40.

Storm Flight was another four lengths back and paid $3.20.

Free At Last was declared the winner of the $88,650 Hill Prince Stakes on the turf course at Belmont Park after stewards disqualified Casino Magistrate to second for boring out nearing the wire.

Ridden by Jerry Bailey, Free At Last covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:41 and returned $9.80, $5.40 and $3.20. Casino Magistrate, ridden by Eddie Maple, paid $4.20 and $2.40 and Kiri’s Clown returned $3.60.

Arazi is the 4-5 morning line favorite to win Tuesday’s St. James Palace Stakes over a mile at Ascot, England, the colt’s first race since finishing eighth in the Kentucky Derby.

The France-based 3-year-old was made the favorite by English bookmakers over Rodrigo de Triano, winner of the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas, and six others.
