Share

Morningside, with four division titles and one state championship, led all Southern Section high schools in team titles during the 1991-92 school year, the section office announced.

Morningside won the Division VIII football title last fall, followed by the Division III-AA title and State Division III championship in boys’ basketball. Stais Boseman, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound junior who played quarterback in football and guard in basketball, played prominent roles on both teams. He was named Southern Section division player of the year and The Times’ South Bay Player of the Year in both sports.

This spring, both the Morningside boys’ and girls’ track teams won section titles in the 2-A Division. The Monarch girls were also State runner-up after winning the title in 1991.

Peninsula was one of eight schools to win three Southern Section titles during the school year. The Panthers won the Division I-AA and State Division I titles in girls’ basketball, the I-AA boys’ cross-country championship and the 4-A girls’ tennis title. The Peninsula girls’ basketball team, which finished 33-0, also won the mythical national title.

Other Southern Section championships were won by Torrance in 3-A Division girls’ soccer and Chadwick in 1-A girls’ tennis.

A total of 111 team championships were awarded in 21 varsity sports.
