Sweden and Denmark moved into the semifinals of the European soccer championships, Lars Elstrup scoring with 13 minutes to play to give Denmark a 2-1 victory over France, and Thomas Brolin scoring the winning shot in Sweden’s 2-1 victory over England.

After Sweden’s victory, English fans went on a rampage in Stockholm, and police and Swedish news media reported 36 English and 28 Swedish fans were arrested on such charges as assault, theft, drunkenness, possession of drugs and disturbing the peace.

Swedish and English youths battled with sticks, bottles, fists and feet in various parts of Stockholm, breaking windows and looting. More than half a dozen people were reported hospitalized from beatings.

Defending champion Netherlands meets World Cup holder Germany and the Commonwealth of Independent States faces Scotland in games that will determine the other semifinalists.
