OTAY MESA : 3 Brush Fires Burn Near Otay Mountain

Three small brush fires, two reportedly set by an arsonist, broke out Saturday afternoon in rugged terrain east of Brown Field near Otay Mountain, state fire officials said.

Firefighters had extinguished two of the blazes by Saturday evening and were trying to control the other, according to a spokeswoman for the state Department of Forestry.

The first brush fire reportedly resulted from a campfire that ignited a structure, possibly an abandoned ranch house, and burned 20 acres before it was controlled, said forestry spokeswoman Carol Stein.

The other two fires broke out nearby shortly afterward. One burned three acres before being extinguished. The other burned about 10 acres and had not yet been controlled, though firefighters were making good progress, she said.

A total of 180 firefighters battled the three blazes, officials said. Arson investigators are trying to find the cause of the two suspected arson fires.
