A farm laborer was killed near Oxnard when a passing driver lost control of her car and ran off the road and into a field where workers were picking strawberries, authorities said Saturday.

Elias Vergara Rojas, 34, of Ventura, was pronounced dead at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard at 4:43 p.m., said Dale Zentzis, deputy coroner’s investigator for Ventura County. Rojas, an employee of the Bob Jones Ranch in El Rio, died of traumatic head and chest injuries, Zentzis said. He is survived by his wife, Maria, also of Ventura.

The accident occurred at 3:40 p.m. when Martha Ramirez Domingues, 43, of Oxnard, was driving south on Vineyard Avenue, north of Carnegie Street in unincorporated El Rio, the California Highway Patrol reported. Domingues lost control of her car for an unknown reason, crossed the northbound lanes and ran into the field.
