Charley Varrick (A&E; Sunday at 5 p.m., again at 9 p.m.). In the title role of Don Siegel’s terrific 1973 film, Walter Matthau plays a canny crook who’s deliberately a small-timer, which is why the bank in the tiny town of Tres Cruces, N.M., is a natural for him. Things go awry, however, and Varrick finds himself trying to outwit the law on one hand and the Mafia on the other.

La Notte (Bravo Monday at 8 p.m., Tuesday at 12:30 a.m.). Key 1961 Michelangelo Antonioni film starring Marcello Mastroianni and Jeanne Moreau as a disaffected couple.

The Ballad of Cable Hogue (KCOP Saturday at 8 p.m.). One of Sam Peckinpah’s least violent, least-tampered-with and most amiable and reflective Westerns, this 1970 film centers on loner Jason Robards coping with the closing of the frontier and with Stella Stevens (at her considerable best) as the shady lady who would like to cast her lots with him.
