BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Claire: Minors Are Club’s Only Hope

Fred Claire indicated Sunday that some minor league recalls will be made, saying, “The direction of this club is that it is getting younger.”

When asked about trades, Claire said, “We aren’t going to trade younger players, so that eliminates 90% of the trades that could be made . . . salaries are a major factor when dealing with veterans.”

Claire said the minor leagues were the club’s best option.

“There are not a lot of significant moves we can make at this time other than drawing from our own organization,” he said.

The Dodgers’ problem in that area is that the prospects who are most ready are pitchers, such as Pedro Martinez, and the Dodgers’ problem is not starting pitching.

The top position prospects, such as catcher Mike Piazza, outfielders Henry Rodriguez and Billy Ashley, and second baseman Eric Young, are still considered too inexperienced in many areas.

Brett Butler was moved out of the leadoff spot for the first time in more than five years.

“I wasn’t really surprised,” Butler said. “I figured, if somebody else can get on base, it’s a good move.”

During the 10-game losing streak, Butler’s average has dropped from .291 to .266. He has four hits in 34 at-bats.

“I am not the reason we are losing--our defense is the reason we are losing,” Butler said. “But I understand that when I’m not doing the job, if something else will help us win, we should do it.”

Jose Offerman doubled and stole third Sunday, so he probably will stay in the leadoff spot for now.

“He looked pretty good there, I think we’ll keep trying it,” Manager Tom Lasorda said.
